I've always been drawn toward working in mixed medias. I like creating visible and partially hidden layers, adding and subtracting paints, textures and fabrics, leaving remnants behind that only hint at what was there before. Without preconception, the process guides me towards the finished work and end results suggest that surfaces have been pulled away and inner workings are exposed.
In my works I am trying to capture the mysterious qualities of life, trace the paths we follow and the paths we cross, connect with ghosts and shadows.
Most recently I have begun a series in textiles. I think that we have a natural, deeply emotional connection to fabrics. I am trying to get at the core of that emotional connection.
I work in light weight cotton, and employ dyes and stitching to alter the fabric. The cotton and dying process is unpredictable, which I like because I am again guided by the working process, instead of guided by preconception. I use the dyes to create unmanufactured, found tones. The stitching is sometimes wandering and sometimes purposeful, suggesting visible and invisible shape and contour. The finished pieces to me suggest my own emotional ghosts or shadows, a connection to hidden inner worlds.
